the short version: the app collects nothing

Ivy Dictionary Privacy Policy

Summary

The Ivy Dictionary app does not collect or transmit any personal data. The Android app does not even request network access: your word books, lookup history and review records stay on your own device. Our website keeps ordinary access logs, as described in section 7.

1. What we do not collect

This is about the Ivy Dictionary app (for the website, see section 7):

  • No personal information: no name, email, phone number, device identifiers or location.
  • No lookups, word books or usage habits.
  • No account, no ads, no analytics or crash reporting, no third-party SDKs.
  • The Android app does not request the INTERNET permission, so it cannot send data over the network.

2. Data stored on your device

Data Used for
Word books, word contexts and tags Word books
Lookup history Recent lookups, home screen
Review records Scheduling reviews (spaced repetition)
Settings (theme, accent, exam target, reminder time, …) Remembering your preferences
Sync key (if you turn on sync) Encrypting sync files

This data never leaves your device unless you take one of the actions in sections 3 and 4.

3. Sync and export (started by you)

  • Sync: you can choose a folder (one whose contents you keep the same across your devices) or export/import a sync file by hand to sync your own devices. Sync files are encrypted (XChaCha20-Poly1305) with a key kept only on your devices; we cannot read them and they pass through no server of ours.
  • Export: you can export word books as CSV, Anki files or a full backup, saved where you choose. Before restoring from a full backup, the app saves the data being replaced to its own data folder (backups).

4. System backup

If Android backup is turned on in your phone's settings, Android may back up Ivy Dictionary's word books, history, review records and settings to your own Google account, so they can be restored on a new phone. This is done by Android and Google under Google's privacy policy; we never receive this data. The dictionary itself is not included. You can turn backup off in the system settings.

5. Permissions (Android)

Permission Purpose
POST_NOTIFICATIONS Review reminders, requested only when you turn them on
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED Rescheduling the review reminder after a restart

6. Deleting your data

Uninstalling the app, or clearing its data in the system settings, deletes everything the app stored on the device. Deleted word books stay in the recycle bin for 30 days, and you can remove them for good there at any time; other deleted items are cleared automatically after 30 days. Files you exported or synced to a folder are yours to delete.

7. Website (ivydictionary.xlab.nz)

This section applies to the website only, not to the app.

  • When you visit the website, the server keeps an access log: your IP address, the time, the address requested (including which file was downloaded), the referring page, the browser identification (User-Agent), the response status and the size transferred.
  • We use it to count visits and downloads, to fix problems and to prevent abuse. We do not use it to identify you, combine it with other data, sell it, or give it to anyone else unless the law requires us to.
  • Access logs are kept on our own server and deleted after 12 months. Statistics are kept only as totals without IP addresses.
  • The website uses no cookies, runs no scripts, and uses no third-party analytics, advertising or font services.

8. Children

The app collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

9. Changes

If this policy changes we will update this page and its effective date. Any future feature that needs network access or collects data will be clearly disclosed in the app and require your consent.
